The 18 best things to do
Landmark · Old Town
1.Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge)
The covered wooden footbridge crossing the Reuss at an angle dates from the 14th century and is the city's emblem, with the octagonal stone Water Tower standing in the river beside it. Triangular 17th-century paintings of Lucerne's history hang under the roof; many were lost in a fire in 1993, and the bridge was rebuilt within a year.
Walk it early in the morning, then view it from the Rathausquai or the Seebrücke to get the bridge and the Water Tower in one frame.

3.Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip
The classic loop takes a boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway (with gradients of up to 48%) up to Pilatus Kulm at about 2,100 metres, then aerial cableways and gondolas down to Kriens and a city bus back. The summit has short trails to viewpoints over Lake Lucerne and the Alps.
The cogwheel railway runs only in the warmer half of the year; in winter, go up and down by cableway from Kriens.

Look up: the most elaborate frescoes are on the upper floors around Weinmarkt and Hirschenplatz.

The views reach over the rooftops to the lake and Pilatus.
