Day by day
Day 1: Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) and Weinmarkt, Kornmarkt and the old town
Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), Weinmarkt, Kornmarkt and the old town and Musegg Wall and towers, then KKL Luzern and Kunstmuseum Luzern in the evening.
Morning
Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge)
The covered wooden footbridge crossing the Reuss at an angle dates from the 14th century and is the city's emblem, with the octagonal stone Water Tower standing in the river beside it.
Late morning
Weinmarkt, Kornmarkt and the old town
Look up: the most elaborate frescoes are on the upper floors around Weinmarkt and Hirschenplatz.
Lunch
Lunch: Lucerne vol-au-vent
Traditional restaurants in the old town and guildhall-style dining rooms; look for 'Pastetli' on the menu.
Afternoon
Musegg Wall and towers
About 870 metres of the medieval city wall still run along the hill above the old town, with nine towers.
Evening
KKL Luzern and Kunstmuseum Luzern
Even without a ticket, walk under the roof at the water's edge for a view of the old town across the bay.
Day 2: Lion Monument and Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip
Lion Monument, Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip and Lake Lucerne boat trip, then Old Town riverside in the evening.
Morning
Lion Monument
Combine it with the Glacier Garden and the Bourbaki Panorama, both within a few minutes' walk.
Late morning
Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip
The classic loop takes a boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway (with gradients of up to 48%) up to Pilatus Kulm at about 2,100 metres, then aerial cableways and gondolas down to Kriens and a city bus back.
Lunch
Lunch: Alpine macaroni
Mountain restaurants on Pilatus, Rigi and Stanserhorn, and rustic restaurants in town.
Afternoon
Lake Lucerne boat trip
Swiss Travel Pass and Half Fare Card holders travel free or at a discount on scheduled boats; check before buying a separate cruise ticket.
Evening
Old Town riverside
Bars and terraces along the Rathausquai and Unter der Egg facing the Kapellbrücke, busiest on summer evenings.
Day 3: Swiss Museum of Transport and Spreuer Bridge
Swiss Museum of Transport, Spreuer Bridge and Jesuit Church, then Neustadt and Baselstrasse in the evening.
Morning
Swiss Museum of Transport
The Verkehrshaus covers Swiss rail, road, air, water and space travel with real locomotives, planes, cable cars and simulators, plus a planetarium, a large-format cinema and the Swiss Chocolate Adventure ride.
Late morning
Spreuer Bridge
It is far quieter than the Kapellbrücke, so take your time with the paintings.
Lunch
Lunch: Lake perch and whitefish
Restaurants with lake terraces in Lucerne, Weggis and Vitznau; ask whether the fish is local, as much is imported.
Afternoon
Jesuit Church
Built in the second half of the 17th century on the left bank of the Reuss, this was the first large Baroque church in Switzerland.
Evening
Neustadt and Baselstrasse
Neighbourhood bars, craft-beer spots and international eateries with lower prices and a local crowd.
Before you go
- Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip: Reserve cogwheel seats in summer, when midday departures from Alpnachstad fill up.
Swiss Travel Pass
Unlimited travel on most Swiss trains, buses and lake boats, free entry to many museums, free travel up Rigi and discounts on Pilatus and other mountains.
If it rains
- Swap in Church of St. Leodegar (Hofkirche) (Hof): It is a five-minute walk from the Lion Monument, so link the two on the way back to the lake.
- Swap in Rosengart Collection (Neustadt): Start with the Klee rooms downstairs, which are often quieter than the Picasso galleries.
- Swap in Bourbaki Panorama (Löwenplatz): Use the audio commentary; it explains scenes in the painting you would otherwise miss.
Where to stay for this itinerary
With 3 nights, Old Town (Altstadt) keeps most of this route within easy reach. For a calmer or cheaper base, Station and KKL area ($$$) suits first-timers, solo travellers and budget. Compare every area.
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 14–24 hours of visiting over 3 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 8.5 hours in December to 15.9 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
