Souq Waqif and Old Doha

The area around Souq Waqif is the most atmospheric base in Doha, with small boutique hotels set inside the souq itself and the Museum of Islamic Art a 10-minute walk away along the Corniche. Evenings are lively with families, shisha cafés and grill restaurants, and Souq Waqif metro station on the Gold Line is on the edge of the market.

Good
Walk to the souq, museum and Corniche; Strong local character; Restaurants open late
Watch out
Few hotels licensed to serve alcohol; Busy and noisy on weekend evenings
Nearby
Souq Waqif, Museum of Islamic Art, Falcon Souq, Doha Corniche

Romantic day trips

  • Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea) (About 1.5 hours each way by 4x4) — In the far south-east of Qatar, tall sand dunes run straight down to a tidal inlet of the Gulf, with Saudi Arabia visible across the water.
  • Zekreet and East-West/West-East (About 1 hour 15 minutes by car) — On Qatar's west coast, Richard Serra's four steel plates, each more than 14 metres tall, stand across a kilometre of open desert in the Brouq Nature Reserve.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Machboos, Madrouba and Harees. Portions of machboos and grills are large and made for sharing; order less than you think.
