What to drink

  • Mint tea — Green tea brewed with fresh spearmint and sugar, poured from a height; Casablanca's pavement cafés serve it alongside espresso and nous-nous, a half-milk coffee.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. August has the warmest evenings, with lows around 20°C (68°F).

Getting home late

  • Tram — Buy a rechargeable card at station machines and validate before boarding.
  • Taxi — Ask for the meter ('le compteur'); white grand taxis are for longer routes.
  • Bus — Busway rapid bus lines and city buses supplement the tram, mainly useful for residents' routes.
  • Walking — Downtown, the Marché Central, the old medina and the Hassan II Mosque are linked on foot within about 30 minutes.

Late-night bites

  • Maakouda — Sandwich stalls around the old medina and in Maarif.
  • Snail soup — Street carts in the old medina and around markets, mainly in the evenings.

Staying safe at night

Check your own government's travel advice before travel. Bag snatching and pickpocketing occur in crowded areas, markets and around train stations, so keep phones out of reach; take care with strong currents and waves on the Atlantic beaches and swim only where lifeguards are present.
