Quick answer

Cairo stays up late: coffeehouses, juice bars and shops are busy past midnight, especially in summer and during Ramadan. Bars and clubs are concentrated in Zamalek, Downtown and the big hotels, while Nile dinner cruises and cultural shows suit those who don't drink. The main areas are Zamalek, Downtown, Khan el-Khalili and Al-Hussein and Nile Corniche.

What to drink

  • Sugarcane juice — Fresh sugarcane crushed to order into a pale green, frothy juice, an inexpensive and refreshing drink on a hot day.
  • Karkadeh and coffeehouse tea — Karkadeh is a deep-red hibiscus infusion served hot or iced, while the ahwa, Cairo's street coffeehouse, serves sweet black tea, Turkish-style coffee and shisha to customers playing backgammon and dominoes.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 22°C (72°F).

Getting home late

  • Metro — The middle carriages of each train are reserved for women; avoid rush hours, when trains are packed.
  • Ride-hailing — Check the plate number before getting in, and expect long journeys at rush hour.
  • Taxi — White taxis are everywhere, but meters are not always used; agree the fare before setting off or book through an app instead.
  • Walking — Downtown, Zamalek and Islamic Cairo are rewarding on foot, but pavements are uneven and crossing big roads takes patience — cross alongside locals.

Late-night bites

  • Koshari — Koshari restaurants across the city; Abou Tarek on Champollion Street Downtown is the best known.
  • Ta'ameya — Ful and ta'ameya shops and breakfast carts all over the city.
  • Hawawshi — Street-food shops Downtown and in local neighbourhoods.

Staying safe at night

The most common problems are persistent touts and commission-driven 'helpers' at the Giza plateau and Khan el-Khalili, and very heavy traffic — cross busy roads alongside locals. Women may face unwanted comments, and heat and dust are real hazards from April to September.
