Downtown
Downtown Cairo (Wust el-Balad) was laid out in the late 19th century on a Parisian model, and its faded belle-époque buildings around Talaat Harb Square hold budget hotels, old cafés such as Café Riche, street coffeehouses and shops. Tahrir Square and the Egyptian Museum are on its western edge, and the metro at Sadat and Nasser puts Coptic Cairo and Maadi within easy reach.
- Good
- Lowest-priced central hotels; Metro access and walkable sights; Lively street life and cafés
- Watch out
- Noisy, congested streets; Many hotels are in ageing buildings with old lifts
- Nearby
- Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square, Talaat Harb Square, Khan el-Khalili

Zamalek
The northern half of Gezira Island, Zamalek is Cairo's calmest central district: tree-lined streets of embassies and villas, with cafés, bookshops, galleries and restaurants along 26th of July Street, and the Cairo Tower and Cairo Opera House at its southern end. Downtown and the Egyptian Museum are a short taxi ride across the bridges.
- Good
- Calm, green streets; Good restaurants and bars; Central but quieter than Downtown
- Watch out
- Taxi needed for most big sights; Traffic on the bridges at rush hour

Garden City
South of Tahrir Square, Garden City's curving streets of villas and embassies were laid out in the early 20th century, and its stretch of the Corniche is lined with large international hotels with Nile views. It is a short walk to the Egyptian Museum and Downtown, and felucca landings are close by on the riverbank.
- Good
- Nile-view hotels; Walkable to Downtown and the museum; Quieter streets
- Watch out
- Expensive; Few local restaurants in the district itself
- Nearby
- Nile Corniche, Tahrir Square, Egyptian Museum, Manial Palace

Giza Pyramids area
Hotels and guesthouses around Nazlet el-Samman and the historic Mena House look straight onto the Giza pyramids, and the Grand Egyptian Museum is a short drive away. Staying here makes early visits to the plateau easy, but Islamic Cairo and Downtown are 45 minutes to more than an hour away in traffic.
- Good
- Pyramid views from many rooftops; Early access to the plateau and the GEM; Closer to Sphinx International Airport
- Watch out
- Far from the rest of Cairo; Pushy horse and camel handlers around Nazlet el-Samman
- Nearby

Islamic Cairo
The walled Fatimid city and its surroundings hold hundreds of medieval monuments: Al-Muizz Street, Al-Azhar Mosque, Bab Zuweila and the lanes of Khan el-Khalili, with the Citadel and Al-Azhar Park to the south. A few guesthouses let you wake up among the minarets, but the area is crowded, noisy and conservative.
- Good
- Historic sights on the doorstep; Atmospheric evenings around Al-Hussein; Low prices
- Watch out
- Few good hotels; Crowded and conservative; dress modestly
- Nearby
- Khan el-Khalili, Al-Muizz Street, Al-Azhar Mosque, Bab Zuweila

Maadi
Maadi is a leafy residential suburb on the Nile south of the centre, long popular with expatriates, with villas, cafés and international restaurants around Road 9 and a riverside Corniche. Metro Line 1 runs through it to Downtown and Coptic Cairo, making it a calm base for longer stays.
- Good
- Quiet and green; Direct metro to the centre; Wide choice of restaurants

Heliopolis
Founded in 1905 by the Belgian industrialist Baron Empain, Heliopolis has arcaded streets in its Korba district, a domed basilica and the temple-like Baron Empain Palace. It is about 15–20 minutes from Cairo International Airport, which suits short stopovers and late flights.
- Good
- Close to the airport; Calmer, distinctive architecture; Good cafés in Korba
- Watch out
