Luxor neighbourhoods in detail

$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples, luxury and culture

East Bank Corniche

The Corniche el-Nil runs along the East Bank past Luxor Temple, the Luxor Museum and the 1886 Winter Palace hotel, with felucca captains and cruise boats moored below. It is the most convenient base: Luxor Temple is on the doorstep, Karnak is a short taxi or carriage ride north, and public ferries cross to the West Bank from the quay opposite the temple.

Good
Walk to Luxor Temple and the ferry; Nile views; Widest choice of hotels
Watch out
Persistent touts and carriage drivers; Traffic noise on the Corniche
Nearby
Luxor Temple, Luxor Museum, Mummification Museum, Public ferry landing

$$$ · Best for families, luxury and quiet stays

Khaled Ibn al-Walid Street

South of the centre, Khaled Ibn al-Walid Street and the riverbank beside it hold larger international hotels with pools and gardens, plus a strip of restaurants and shops aimed at visitors. It is quieter than the Corniche but a taxi ride from the main temples.

Good
Big pools and gardens; Calmer than the centre; Choice of restaurants
Watch out
Taxi needed for the temples; Less local character
Nearby
Corniche el-Nil, Luxor Temple

$ · Best for budget, solo travellers and food lovers

Souq and station area

The tourist souq runs inland from Luxor Temple towards the railway station, with spice, scarf and souvenir stalls, local cafés and the cheap eateries where Luxor's residents eat ful and ta'ameya. Budget hotels and guesthouses cluster on and around Television Street.

Good
Lowest prices; Close to the station; Local food
Watch out
Busy and noisy; Intense sales pressure in the souq
Nearby
Luxor souq, Luxor railway station, Luxor Temple

$$ · Best for culture and quiet stays

Karnak

The area around Karnak Temple, about 3 km north of Luxor Temple, has a handful of hotels and guesthouses, some with Nile views, and gives early access to Karnak before the tour buses. It is quieter than the centre but has fewer restaurants.

Good
Walk to Karnak at opening; Quieter streets
Watch out
Few restaurants; Taxi needed for the centre
Nearby
Karnak Temple, Avenue of Sphinxes

$ · Best for budget, quiet stays, couples and solo travellers

West Bank Gezira

Al-Gezira is the village around the West Bank ferry landing, where family-run guesthouses and small hotels look across the river to Luxor Temple. Life moves at village pace among sugarcane fields and donkey carts, and it is the closest base to the tombs and temples of the West Bank.

Good
Calm and rural; Close to West Bank sites; Easy ferry to the East Bank
Watch out
Few restaurants and shops; Little evening life
Nearby
Public ferry landing, Colossi of Memnon, Banana Island

$$$ · Best for quiet stays, couples, culture and luxury

West Bank Qurna and Al-Bairat

Further inland, the villages between Al-Bairat and Qurna sit right beneath the desert cliffs, close to Medinet Habu, the Ramesseum and the Tombs of the Nobles. A few characterful mud-brick and boutique hotels here have gardens and pools and make a peaceful base for exploring the necropolis at dawn.

Good
Monuments on the doorstep; Peaceful setting; Atmospheric hotels
Watch out
Isolated without a driver; Few dining options outside hotels
Nearby
Medinet Habu, Ramesseum, Tombs of the Nobles, Deir el-Medina
