Quick answer

Cairo can be thrilling for children — standing beside the pyramids, seeing real mummies and riding a felucca — but heat, crowds and traffic are tiring. Plan short days, mix museums with time in Al-Azhar Park or a hotel pool, and visit between October and April. Top picks: Pyramids of Giza, Great Sphinx and Grand Egyptian Museum. Families usually base themselves in Zamalek.

Historic site · Giza

1.Pyramids of Giza

The Great Pyramid of Khufu, built about 4,500 years ago and the last surviving wonder of the ancient world, stands with the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure and smaller queens' pyramids on the desert plateau west of the Nile. You can walk around the bases, enter the Great Pyramid's narrow passages with an extra ticket, and see all three together from the panoramic viewpoint to the south-west.

Arrive at opening to beat the heat and the tour buses, and agree the price, route and length of any camel or horse ride before you get on.

Tickets for the Great Pyramid's interior are limited and sold separately from plateau entry; buy them early in the day or online.

2.Great Sphinx

Carved from the bedrock of the plateau, the lion-bodied Sphinx is about 73 metres long and 20 metres high and is usually associated with the pharaoh Khafre. The terrace beside Khafre's Valley Temple, built of massive granite blocks, gives the classic view with a pyramid behind.

Leave the Sphinx for the end of your plateau loop, and return for the evening sound-and-light show if you want to see it lit.

Museum · Giza

3.Grand Egyptian Museum

Opened in full in 2025 about 2 km from the pyramids, the GEM is described as the largest museum in the world devoted to a single civilisation. A colossal statue of Ramesses II stands in the atrium, a grand staircase lined with royal statues climbs to the main galleries, and the complete treasure of Tutankhamun is displayed together for the first time.

Allow at least half a day, head to the Tutankhamun galleries before they fill, and pair the museum with the pyramids on the same side of the city.

Museum · Fustat

4.National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

Beside the Ain el-Sira lake in Fustat, NMEC tells Egypt's story from prehistory to the present, and its dimly lit Royal Mummies Hall holds the mummies of rulers such as Ramesses II and Hatshepsut, moved here in a televised parade in 2021.

Go straight down to the Royal Mummies Hall first, and combine the museum with Coptic Cairo nearby.

Experience · Nile Corniche

5.Felucca ride on the Nile

Traditional wooden sailboats with tall triangular sails wait at landings along the Corniche in Garden City and Downtown. An hour on the water at sunset shows the city from a calmer angle, with the Cairo Tower and the Nile bridges lighting up as night falls.

Agree the price for the boat and the length of the trip before boarding, and bring your own drinks and snacks.

Park · Islamic Cairo

6.Al-Azhar Park

Built on a centuries-old rubbish mound and opened in 2005 by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, this 30-hectare park of lawns, fountains and palm-lined paths gives some of the best views over Islamic Cairo and the Citadel. Work on the park uncovered a long stretch of the 12th-century Ayyubid city wall along its edge.

Come in the late afternoon for sunset, when families picnic and the minarets glow, and stay for dinner at one of the park restaurants.

7.Citadel of Saladin and Muhammad Ali Mosque

Saladin began this hilltop fortress in the 1170s, and it was the seat of Egypt's rulers for some 700 years. Its skyline is dominated by the Ottoman-style Mosque of Muhammad Ali, clad in alabaster and built from the 1830s, and the terraces look across Cairo's minarets towards the pyramids on clear days.

Visit in the morning, take a taxi up, then walk down to the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques below.

Where families should stay

$$$ · Best for couples, first-timers, food lovers, families and nightlife

Zamalek

The northern half of Gezira Island, Zamalek is Cairo's calmest central district: tree-lined streets of embassies and villas, with cafés, bookshops, galleries and restaurants along 26th of July Street, and the Cairo Tower and Cairo Opera House at its southern end. Downtown and the Egyptian Museum are a short taxi ride across the bridges.

Good
Calm, green streets; Good restaurants and bars; Central but quieter than Downtown
Watch out
Taxi needed for most big sights; Traffic on the bridges at rush hour
Nearby
Cairo Tower, Cairo Opera House, Gezira Island, Downtown

Family travel tips

  • The Great Pyramid's interior passages are steep, narrow and hot, and don't suit small children or anyone claustrophobic.
  • The GEM is spacious and air-conditioned, making it a good first stop with children.
  • Carry water, hats and sunscreen everywhere, even in winter.
  • Egyptians are very welcoming to children, and restaurants are relaxed about families.
  • Ride-hailing cars rarely have child seats, so bring a travel booster or book a transfer that provides one.

Day trips for families

  • Memphis (About 45 minutes by car) — Little remains of Egypt's first capital, but the open-air museum at Mit Rahina displays a colossal fallen limestone statue of Ramesses II and an alabaster sphinx among palm groves.
  • Fayoum and Wadi El Hitan (About 2.5–3 hours by car) — In the Western Desert beyond the Fayoum oasis, Wadi El Hitan — the Valley of the Whales — is a UNESCO site where fossil skeletons of early whales lie in the sand.

When to go with children

The best months overall are October–March. December is the busiest, so book the big sights early. Weather by month.
