What to drink
- Yorkshire ale — Yorkshire has a long brewing tradition, from Theakston and Black Sheep in Masham to Samuel Smith's in Tadcaster, about 15 km away, and York's own craft brewers. Cask ale is served from hand pumps at cellar temperature.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 12°C (54°F).
| Month | Sunset (15th) | Overnight low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 16:12 | 1°C (34°F) | 11 |
| April | About 20:05 | 4°C (39°F) | 9 |
| July | About 21:29 | 12°C (54°F) | 9 |

Getting home late
- Walking — Most sights inside the walls are within 10 minutes of each other, and the walls themselves are a walking route around the city.
- Bus — Local buses run from the station and the centre to the suburbs, the university and the Park and Ride sites on the ring road.
Late-night bites
- Fat Rascal — Bettys Café Tea Rooms on St Helen's Square, and other bakeries and tearooms in the city.
- Afternoon tea — Bettys on St Helen's Square, the smaller Little Bettys on Stonegate and many independent tearooms.
- Chocolate — Independent chocolate shops in the centre, especially around the Shambles and Stonegate.
Staying safe at night
York is generally low-risk for visitors. Pickpockets occasionally work crowded streets at the Christmas market and on race days, and the city centre can be rowdy late on race-day evenings. The walls have uneven steps and low parapets in places, and riverside paths can flood in winter.
