Quick answer

Manchester has one of Britain's biggest nightlife scenes, built on its music history: craft-beer bars, cocktail bars, gig venues of every size and late clubs. Students fill the city in term time, and weekends are busy all year. The main areas are Northern Quarter, Gay Village, Deansgate Locks and Spinningfields and Ancoats.

Nightlife tips

  • Metrolink trams generally stop running around midnight on weeknights, with later services on some weekend nights; plan a taxi or night bus home.
  • Popular gigs and club nights sell out; buy tickets in advance from official sellers.
  • Expect ID checks at the door of bars and clubs if you look under 25.

What to drink

  • Local craft beer and cask ale — Manchester has a strong brewing scene, from historic family brewers such as Joseph Holt and J.W. Lees to newer craft breweries with taprooms under railway arches. Cask ale is served at cellar temperature from hand pumps.
  • Vimto — A fruity purple soft drink first made in Manchester in 1908 as a health tonic. It is still produced in the area and is sometimes served hot in winter.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 13°C (55°F).

Getting home late

  • Walking — From Piccadilly station to Castlefield via the Northern Quarter, Market Street and Deansgate is about 2.5 km; most central sights are within 15–20 minutes of each other on foot.
  • Tram — Tap in and out with a contactless card or phone at the platform readers; daily and weekly fares are capped automatically.
  • Bus — Bee Network buses run across Greater Manchester, with frequent services along Oxford Road to the universities, the Whitworth and the Curry Mile in Rusholme.
  • Taxi — Black cabs wait at ranks at the main stations and can be hailed, and ride-hailing apps operate across the city.

Staying safe at night

Manchester is generally safe for visitors, but phone snatching and pickpocketing occur in busy shopping streets, on trams and around Piccadilly Gardens and the main stations. Keep phones out of easy reach in crowds and take care late at night in quieter side streets.
