Quick answer
Manchester is informal, friendly and proudly northern, with a dry sense of humour and strong civic pride: the worker bee, a symbol of the city's industrial past, appears on bollards, mosaics and tattoos. Football allegiance, between United and City, and music are frequent topics of conversation.

Things to know
- Queue for buses, at bars during busy times and in shops; pushing in is frowned upon.
- In pubs, order and pay at the bar; there is usually no table service.
- Locals often call people 'love' or 'mate'; it is friendly, not rude.
- Be tactful about football: wearing one club's colours in the other club's pubs on match days can cause friction.
- Stand on the left of escalators only where signs ask; otherwise keep to one side so others can pass.
- Book Old Trafford stadium tour ahead: Book stadium tours online in advance, especially during school holidays.
- Book Etihad Stadium tour ahead: Book online in advance; tours do not run on match days.
- Most of the headline museums are free, including the Science and Industry Museum, Manchester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, the Whitworth and IWM North.
Tipping
Tipping is not expected in pubs. In restaurants, about 10–12.5% is usual for good table service; check the bill first, as some restaurants add a discretionary service charge.

Manchester is generally safe for visitors, but phone snatching and pickpocketing occur in busy shopping streets, on trams and around Piccadilly Gardens and the main stations. Keep phones out of easy reach in crowds and take care late at night in quieter side streets.
