Money-saving tips
- The city walls, the Shambles, the National Railway Museum, the Museum Gardens and Holy Trinity Goodramgate are free.
- A York Minster ticket is usually valid for repeat visits for a year, so keep it if you plan to return.
- Attend Evensong at the Minster to hear the choir and see the interior without a ticket.
- Avoid race weekends, the Ebor Festival and Christmas-market Saturdays if you want lower hotel prices.
- Stay in Bootham, Clifton or The Mount for good-value guesthouses within walking distance.
- Book advance train tickets to York; walk-up fares on the East Coast Main Line are expensive.
Free things to do
- York City Walls — The medieval walls, built largely on Roman and Viking defences, run for about 3.4 km around much of the old city, with four main gateways (bars): Bootham, Monk, Walmgate and Micklegate.
- The Shambles — York's most famous street is a narrow medieval lane of timber-framed buildings whose upper storeys almost touch overhead.
- National Railway Museum — Behind York station, the free national museum fills vast halls with locomotives and carriages, including Mallard, the fastest steam locomotive in the world, royal carriages used by Queen Victoria, and a Japanese Shinkansen bullet train.
- Holy Trinity Goodramgate — Hidden behind a small archway off Goodramgate, this 15th-century church has a rare interior of 17th- and 18th-century box pews, uneven stone floors and medieval stained glass.

Getting around for less
York's centre is compact and largely pedestrianised inside the walls, so walking covers almost everything: York station to the Minster takes about 15 minutes. Buses serve the outskirts and Park and Ride sites, and cycling is popular on flat riverside paths.
