Quick answer
Jerusalem's nightlife is smaller and calmer than Tel Aviv's, centred on the market bars of Mahane Yehuda and the pubs of the city centre, with Thursday the main night out. The main areas are Mahane Yehuda, Shlomtzion HaMalka and Nahalat Shiva and First Station.

Getting home late
- Walking — Inside the walls everything is on foot, over steps and polished limestone; from Jaffa Gate to the Western Wall takes about 10 minutes.
- Tram — The light rail does not run on Shabbat.
- Bus — Pay with a Rav-Kav card or a supported app; drivers do not take cash.
- Taxi — Metered taxis are useful for the Mount of Olives and for luggage; insist on the meter or agree a price first.
Late-night bites
- Jerusalem mixed grill — Grills along Agrippas Street beside Mahane Yehuda market.
- Falafel — Stands on Ben Yehuda Street, around Mahane Yehuda and in the Old City souq.
Staying safe at night
Check your own government's travel advice before and during your trip, as the security situation in the region can change, and follow instructions from local authorities; expect security checks at holy sites. Day to day, watch for pickpockets in crowded Old City lanes and for slippery polished limestone.
- Emergency number
- 100 police, 101 ambulance, 102 fire
