Momochi
Built on reclaimed land on the bay, Momochi has Fukuoka Tower, the Fukuoka City Museum, the Momochi seaside beach and the domed stadium of the SoftBank Hawks baseball team. Large hotels here have sea views, but the area is spread out and about 15–20 minutes from Tenjin by bus or subway.
- Good
- Sea views and a city beach; Next to the baseball dome; Calmer than downtown
- Watch out
- Spread out and car-oriented; Less dining choice in the evenings
- Nearby
- Fukuoka Tower, Momochi Seaside Park, Fukuoka City Museum
Getting to the beaches
- Metro — The Kuko (Airport) line runs from Fukuoka Airport via Hakata, Nakasu-Kawabata and Tenjin to Ohori-koen and Meinohama; the Hakozaki and Nanakuma lines serve other districts.
- Bus — Nishitetsu operates one of Japan's largest bus networks, including frequent buses between Hakata Station and Tenjin and routes to Momochi and Fukuoka Tower.
- Train — JR trains and the Kyushu Shinkansen leave from Hakata Station; Nishitetsu trains from Tenjin serve Dazaifu and Yanagawa.
- Ferry — City ferries cross Hakata Bay from Meinohama to Nokonoshima and from Bayside Place to Uminonakamichi and Shikanoshima.
Beach-weather months
Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in May and August–October. None of them is peak season, so beaches stay manageable.
Beach safety
Fukuoka has low crime. Avoid touts in Nakasu late at night, take care at beaches outside lifeguarded seasons, and watch for typhoon warnings from August to September and heavy rain during the June–July rainy season. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
