Hakata Station

Hakata Station is Kyushu's main rail hub, with the JR Hakata City complex, Hankyu and Amu Plaza stores and restaurant floors above the tracks. The subway reaches Fukuoka Airport in about 5 minutes, and Shinkansen run to Hiroshima, Osaka and southern Kyushu. Business hotels cluster in the surrounding streets.

Tenjin

Tenjin is Fukuoka's commercial heart: department stores, the Tenjin Chikagai underground mall, the Nishitetsu station for Dazaifu and Yanagawa, and yatai stalls in the evenings. It has been extensively redeveloped with new high-rise buildings and is walkable to Daimyo, Nakasu and Ohori Park.

Good

Watch out
Busy at weekends; Hotels slightly pricier than Hakata
Nearby
Tenjin Chikagai, Daimyo, Nakasu, Fukuoka City Hall

Nakasu

Nakasu, the island between the Naka and Hakata rivers, is western Japan's busiest nightlife area outside Osaka. Along its western bank, yatai stalls light up at dusk, while its interior is packed with bars, izakaya and hostess clubs. Canal City Hakata is a short walk east.

Good
Yatai and late food at the door; Central between Hakata and Tenjin; Lively riverside walks
Watch out
Noisy late at night; Touts and hostess clubs in parts
Nearby
Nakasu yatai, Canal City Hakata, Kushida Shrine, Hakata Riverain

$$$ · Best for couples, shopping and food lovers

Daimyo and Akasaka

Daimyo's grid of narrow streets just west of Tenjin is the city's creative quarter, with independent fashion stores, coffee roasters, bistros and small bars. Akasaka next door is quieter and leads to the Fukuoka Castle ruins and Ohori Park.

Good
Interesting shops and cafés; Walk to Tenjin and the castle; Good small restaurants
Watch out
Few hotels; Busy at weekends
Nearby
Daimyo, Fukuoka Castle ruins, Ohori Park, Tenjin

$$ · Best for culture, quiet stays and first-timers

Gion and Hakata Old Town

Around Gion subway station lie Fukuoka's oldest temples — Shofuku-ji, Japan's first Zen temple, Tocho-ji with its wooden Great Buddha, and Jotenji — plus Kushida Shrine, the home of the Yamakasa festival. Hotels here are quieter and walkable to both Hakata Station and Nakasu.

Good
Temples on the doorstep; Quiet at night; Walk to Hakata Station and Nakasu
Watch out
Limited nightlife; Fewer restaurants than Tenjin
Nearby
Shofuku-ji, Tocho-ji, Kushida Shrine, Hakata Machiya Folk Museum

$$$ · Best for families, quiet stays and couples

Ohori Park and Ropponmatsu

West of the centre, the area around Ohori Park and the Fukuoka Castle ruins is green and residential, with cafés along the lake, the Fukuoka Art Museum and the Ropponmatsu district's science museum and bookshop. Subway stations make Tenjin about five minutes away.

Momochi

Built on reclaimed land on the bay, Momochi has Fukuoka Tower, the Fukuoka City Museum, the Momochi seaside beach and the domed stadium of the SoftBank Hawks baseball team. Large hotels here have sea views, but the area is spread out and about 15–20 minutes from Tenjin by bus or subway.

Good
Sea views and a city beach; Next to the baseball dome; Calmer than downtown
Watch out
Spread out and car-oriented; Less dining choice in the evenings
