Food and drink to take home

Edible souvenirs travel best when they are dry or sealed: consider Bite-sized gyoza, Amaou strawberries and Umegae mochi. Gyoza bars around Nakasu and Tenjin and at yatai. Check your home country's rules on bringing food and drink back.

Paying and bargaining

Prices are in JPY. Tipping is not practised in Japan. High-end hotels and some restaurants add a service charge to the bill.

  • At yatai, share the bench, keep bags small and pay before you leave; cash is still common.
  • Queue for ramen shops and trains rather than crowding the entrance.
  • Don't eat while walking along busy shopping streets; finish food at the stall.

When to shop

Shops and markets are quietest in January–February and June; the busiest months are the peak holidays.

  • January: Tamaseseri ball-grabbing festival at Hakozaki Shrine (usually 3 January)
  • March: Fukuoka Castle Sakura Festival in Maizuru Park (usually late March to early April)
  • September: Hojoya festival at Hakozaki Shrine (12–18 September)
  • October: Hakata Okunchi autumn festival at Kushida Shrine (usually 23–24 October)
  • November: Christmas markets in Tenjin and at Hakata Station (usually mid-November to 25 December)
