Nightlife tips

  • Crop Over fetes in July and August are ticketed; buy through the organisers.
  • Use taxis late at night; ZRs and buses thin out after mid-evening.
  • Rum is strong and generously poured; pace yourself in the heat.

What to drink

  • Rum punch — Made with local rum, lime, sugar syrup, Angostura bitters and nutmeg, following the old rhyme 'one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak'.
  • Mauby — A bittersweet drink brewed from the bark of the mauby tree with spices and sugar; an acquired taste and popular with locals.
  • Banks beer — The island's own lager, brewed in Barbados and drunk ice-cold at rum shops and beach bars.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. May has the warmest evenings, with lows around 24°C (75°F).

Getting home late

  • Bus — Carry the exact fare in Barbados dollars; government buses do not give change.
  • Taxi — Agree the fare before you set off and confirm whether it is in Barbados or US dollars.
  • Walking — The Richard Haynes Boardwalk links Hastings and Rockley along the south coast, and towns such as Holetown and Speightstown are walkable.

Late-night bites

  • Fish cakes and bakes — Snackettes, beach bars and roadside vendors across the island.
  • Cutters — Rum shops and beach shacks, especially on the west and south coasts.
  • Bajan pepper sauce — On every table; bottled versions sell in supermarkets.

Staying safe at night

Most visits are trouble-free, but petty theft from beaches and parked cars happens; keep valuables out of sight. Swim only where it is calm — the east and southeast coasts have strong currents — and heed red flags.
