Money-saving tips

  • The Barbados dollar is fixed at 2 to 1 with the US dollar, and US dollars are widely accepted; pay in local currency to avoid poor rounding.
  • Use the flat-fare buses and ZRs instead of taxis for trips along the coast.
  • Stay on the south coast for more affordable apartments and hotels than the west coast.
  • Eat at Oistins, rum shops and lunch counters for local prices.
  • Travel in May, June or November for good weather at lower prices than the winter season.
  • Self-catering apartments and supermarkets such as those in Hastings and Holetown cut food costs.

Free things to do

  • Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison — Bridgetown's old centre and the British military Garrison to its south were listed by UNESCO in 2011 as an outstanding example of British colonial architecture.
  • Carlisle Bay — This wide bay just south of Bridgetown has calm water and several shallow shipwrecks within swimming distance of the beach, now home to reef fish and turtles.
  • Bathsheba and the Soup Bowl — On the Atlantic coast, huge coral boulders sit in the surf off Bathsheba's beach, and the Soup Bowl reef break draws surfers from around the world.
  • Crane Beach — On the southeast coast, this cove of pinkish sand below cliffs is reached by steps or through the Crane resort.
  • Bottom Bay — A small, cliff-backed bay of white sand and coconut palms on the southeast coast, reached by steps from the clifftop car park.

Eating well for less

  • Fish cakes and bakes — Snackettes, beach bars and roadside vendors across the island.
  • Cutters — Rum shops and beach shacks, especially on the west and south coasts.
  • Bajan pepper sauce — On every table; bottled versions sell in supermarkets.

Getting around for less

Barbados is about 34 km long and 23 km wide, but roads are narrow and winding, so journeys take longer than distances suggest. Government buses and privately run minibuses and route taxis ('ZRs') connect Bridgetown with both coasts, and taxis and rental cars fill the gaps.
