Money-saving tips

  • Hire a car for the length of your stay; daily taxis to beaches add up quickly.
  • Eat lunch at Plasa Bieuw or local snèks rather than resort restaurants.
  • Public beaches such as Playa Kenepa are free; managed beaches charge entry or loungers.
  • Refill bottles with desalinated tap water instead of buying water.
  • Travel between April and November, excluding summer holidays, for lower accommodation prices.

Free things to do

  • Handelskade — The row of brightly painted, gabled Dutch-colonial merchant houses facing the Sint Anna Bay is Curaçao's postcard image and the centrepiece of Willemstad's UNESCO-listed historic area.
  • Queen Emma Bridge — Opened in 1888, this pedestrian pontoon bridge floats on boats and swings aside to let ships into the harbour, linking Punda and Otrobanda.
  • Playa Kenepa — Grote Knip, or Kenepa Grandi, is the island's most photographed beach: a white-sand cove framed by cliffs and turquoise water, with a viewpoint above it.
  • Fort Amsterdam — Built by the Dutch West India Company in the 1630s at the harbour entrance, the fort now houses the governor's residence and government offices behind its yellow walls.
  • Rif Fort — This 19th-century fort guarding the Otrobanda side of the harbour mouth now houses shops and restaurants inside its walls.
  • Scharloo — Across a small bridge from Punda, Scharloo was the district of wealthy Jewish merchants in the 19th century, and its Scharlooweg is lined with restored mansions in pastel colours, including the green 'Wedding Cake House'.

Where to stay on a budget

$$ · Best for first-timers, culture and shopping

Punda

The historic waterfront of Handelskade, the synagogue and shopping streets east of the bay

$$ · Best for budget, culture and solo travellers

Otrobanda

The 'other side' of the bay with narrow lanes, street art and the Rif Fort

$$ · Best for quiet stays, beach and couples

Westpunt and Banda Abou

Quiet western countryside of cove beaches, cliffs and national parks

Eating well for less

  • Pastechi — Snèks (local snack bars), bakeries and roadside stands across the island.
  • Bitterballen — Bars and cafés in Punda and Pietermaai, often alongside a cold beer.

Getting around for less

Willemstad is walkable, but the beaches, national parks and west end are spread across a 60-km island with limited public transport, so most visitors rent a car. Taxis and tours fill the gaps.
