Quick answer

Curaçao's nightlife centres on Pietermaai's bars and Mambo Beach's beach clubs, with live Latin and Caribbean music at weekends. Things start late and are liveliest from Thursday to Saturday. The main areas are Pietermaai, Mambo Beach Boulevard and Punda and Otrobanda waterfront.

What to drink

  • Blue Curaçao — The orange liqueur flavoured with the peel of the Laraha orange, sold clear, blue, orange or green; it appears in many island cocktails.

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. June has the warmest evenings, with lows around 27°C (81°F).

Getting home late

  • Walking — Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai are all walkable, connected by the Queen Emma Bridge and the high Queen Juliana Bridge for cars.
  • Bus — Large public buses and smaller privately run 'bus' vans leave from terminals in Punda and Otrobanda for different parts of the island, but services to the west end are infrequent.
  • Taxi — Ask your hotel to call a taxi for late-night returns.
  • Ferry — When the Queen Emma Bridge opens for shipping, free pedestrian ferries cross the Sint Anna Bay between Punda and Otrobanda.

Late-night bites

  • Pastechi — Snèks (local snack bars), bakeries and roadside stands across the island.
  • Bitterballen — Bars and cafés in Punda and Pietermaai, often alongside a cold beer.

Staying safe at night

Car break-ins at beaches and isolated parking areas are the most common problem, so leave nothing in vehicles. The north coast has strong waves and currents and is not for swimming; on the south coast, watch for sun exposure and sharp coral.
