Day by day
Day 1: Handelskade and Queen Emma Bridge
Handelskade, Queen Emma Bridge, Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue and Fort Amsterdam, then Rif Fort in the evening.
Morning
Handelskade
For the classic photo, cross the Queen Emma Bridge to the Otrobanda side and shoot back across the water in the late-afternoon light. Allow 30–60 minutes.
Late morning
Queen Emma Bridge
Stay on the bridge when the warning signal sounds and ride along as it swings open — it is allowed and a memorable short ride. Allow 20 minutes.
Lunch
Lunch: Keshi yená
Local restaurants and the cook-stalls of Plasa Bieuw in Punda.
Afternoon
Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue
Visit outside service times and allow time for the small museum in the courtyard, which explains the sand floor. Allow 1 hour.
Late afternoon
Fort Amsterdam
Walk through the gate to the inner courtyard and look for the cannonball in the Fortkerk's façade. Allow 30–45 minutes.
Evening
Rif Fort
Climb onto the ramparts at sunset for views of Handelskade, then eat at one of the restaurants inside the fort.
If it rains
- Swap in Hato Caves (Hato): Ask your guide about the Caquetío rock drawings on the trail outside; many visitors miss them.
- Swap in Landhuis Chobolobo (Salinja): Book the cocktail workshop rather than just the short tour if you want to taste more than one flavour.
Where to stay for this itinerary
$$ · Best for first-timers, culture and shopping
Punda
The historic waterfront of Handelskade, the synagogue and shopping streets east of the bay
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 3–4 hours of visiting over one day, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 11.4 hours in December to 12.8 hours in June.
Getting between stops: Car. Renting a car is the most practical way to explore the coves of Banda Abou, Christoffel and Shete Boka; roads are generally good and driving is on the right.
