Beau Vallon
Beau Vallon has the longest easy swimming beach on Mahé, with calm water for much of the year, dive centres, water sports, guesthouses and several large hotels. Restaurants and a few bars line the road behind the sand, and Victoria is about 15 minutes away over the hill. Bel Ombre and the trail to Anse Major start at its western end.
- Good
- Swimmable beach most of the year; Wide choice of accommodation; Restaurants and dive centres
- Watch out
- The most developed beach on Mahé; Fewer granite boulders than the islands
- Nearby
- Beau Vallon beach, Bel Ombre, Anse Major trail, Victoria
Getting to the beaches
- Bus — Public buses on Mahé and Praslin are cheap, run from the main terminal in Victoria and cover most coastal roads, though services thin out in the evening and on Sundays.
- Car — Car hire is widely available on Mahé and Praslin.
- Ferry — Fast catamarans link Victoria with Praslin in about an hour and Praslin with La Digue in about 15 minutes; crossings to Praslin can be rough in the trade-wind season.
- Boat — Licensed boat operators run snorkelling and island trips to Sainte Anne, Curieuse, Cousin and Saint Pierre from Victoria, Beau Vallon and Côte d'Or.
Beach-weather months
Air temperatures rarely reach classic beach weather here: the warmest month, March, averages 31°C (88°F).
Beach safety
Strong currents and rip tides occur at exposed beaches such as Grand Anse on La Digue and Anse Intendance, especially from May to October; swim where locals swim and heed warning flags. Petty theft from parked cars and unattended beach bags happens, so keep valuables out of sight. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
