Nightlife tips
- Use ride-hailing apps door to door at night rather than walking between districts.
- The Metrô usually runs until around midnight, later on Saturdays; check the last train before you go out.
- Clubs often charge entry with a drink credit (consumação); keep your card, as losing it can mean a large charge.

Getting home late
- Metro — Avoid weekday rush hours, roughly 7–9am and 5–8pm, when trains are packed.
- Ride-hailing — Ride-hailing apps are widely used, inexpensive by international standards and safer than hailing cars on the street at night.
- Bus — An extensive bus network with dedicated corridors covers the whole city; it is useful for Ibirapuera and areas off the Metrô, but routes are complex for first-time visitors.
- Taxi — White taxis use meters and can be found at ranks and booked by app; fares rise at night and on Sundays.
- Walking — Walking works within neighbourhoods such as Paulista and Jardins, Pinheiros and Vila Madalena, or the Centro, but distances between areas are large.
Late-night bites
- Pastel de feira — Stalls at the end of the city's weekly street markets (feiras livres) and at the Mercadão.
- Coxinha — Padarias (bakeries) and lanchonetes on almost every corner.
- Açaí na tigela — Juice bars (casas de suco) and açaí counters across the city.
Staying safe at night
Phone snatching and pickpocketing are the main risks, especially in the Centro, around Luz and Sé stations, on Rua 25 de Março and along Avenida Paulista. Keep phones out of sight near the kerb, avoid empty streets in the Centro after dark and use ride-hailing apps at night.
- Emergency number
- 190 police, 192 ambulance (SAMU), 193 fire
