São Paulo neighbourhoods in detail

$$$ · Best for first-timers, culture, solo travellers and budget

Avenida Paulista and Bela Vista

Avenida Paulista runs for nearly 3 km along a ridge, lined by MASP, Japan House, the Instituto Moreira Salles and the Casa das Rosas, with Metrô Line 2 beneath it. Hotels of every level cluster around the avenue and in Bela Vista just below, whose Rua 13 de Maio area, known as Bixiga, is the traditional Italian quarter of cantinas.

Good
Central with direct Metrô access; Museums and cultural centres on foot; Car-free Sundays
Watch out
Busy and noisy on weekdays; Phone snatching reported along the avenue
Nearby
MASP, Japan House, Parque Trianon, Bixiga

$$$$ · Best for luxury, shopping, couples and food lovers

Jardins

South-west of Paulista, Jardins (Jardim Paulista and Jardim América) is the city's most polished area for shopping and dining, centred on Rua Oscar Freire and Rua Haddock Lobo. Tree-lined residential streets, international hotels and many of the city's best-known restaurants make it a comfortable, walkable base, a short walk from the Consolação and Trianon-MASP Metrô stations.

Good
Calm and walkable; Top restaurants and boutiques; Close to Paulista and Metrô Line 2
Watch out
Expensive; Few budget hotels
Nearby
Rua Oscar Freire, MASP, Avenida Paulista

$$$ · Best for food lovers, nightlife, solo travellers and shopping

Pinheiros

Pinheiros mixes low-rise streets of bars and restaurants with new apartment towers, and is linked to Paulista and the Centro by Metrô Line 4. Largo da Batata is the main hub, Rua dos Pinheiros and Rua Fradique Coutinho are packed with places to eat, and the Benedito Calixto square hosts an antiques and crafts fair on Saturdays.

Good
Dense food and bar scene; Fast Metrô Line 4; Walk to Vila Madalena
Watch out
Construction noise in places; Fewer classic sights
Nearby
Praça Benedito Calixto, Largo da Batata, Instituto Tomie Ohtake

$$$ · Best for nightlife, couples and solo travellers

Vila Madalena

Vila Madalena is São Paulo's most popular going-out district, with corner bars along Rua Aspicuelta and Rua Mourato Coelho spilling onto the pavements, and the mural-covered alleys of Beco do Batman. By day it has galleries, design shops and cafés; at night, and on match days, the streets fill with crowds.

Good
Best bar-hopping in the city; Street art and galleries; Relaxed daytime café culture
Watch out
Very loud on weekend nights; Steep streets; Vila Madalena Metrô station is at the edge of the district
Nearby
Beco do Batman, Rua Aspicuelta, Pinheiros

$$$$ · Best for luxury, food lovers and nightlife

Itaim Bibi

Itaim Bibi, south of Jardins near Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima, is one of the city's financial districts, packed with business hotels, steakhouses, sushi bars and cocktail lounges. It is close to Ibirapuera Park and Vila Olímpia's offices, but further from Metrô lines than Paulista.

Good
High-end dining and bars; Modern hotels; Close to Ibirapuera
Watch out
Expensive; Heavy traffic; Relies on taxis and ride-hailing
Nearby
Parque do Povo, Ibirapuera Park, Faria Lima

$$ · Best for food lovers, budget and culture

Liberdade

Just south of the Sé, Liberdade grew around Japanese immigrants who arrived from 1908, and later Chinese and Korean communities. Streets such as Rua Galvão Bueno are lined with red lamp posts, Japanese grocers, bakeries and ramen shops, and the weekend food and craft fair fills the square outside Japão-Liberdade Metrô station.

Good
Excellent Asian food at fair prices; Metrô Line 1 to the Centro and Paulista; Lively weekend fair
Watch out
Very crowded at weekends; Quiet and less pleasant late at night
Nearby
Praça da Liberdade, Catedral da Sé, Museu Histórico da Imigração Japonesa

$$ · Best for culture, budget and first-timers

Centro

The old centre around Praça da Sé, Praça da República and the Viaduto do Chá holds the cathedral, the Theatro Municipal, the Mercadão and landmark towers such as the Edifício Itália, the Copan and the Farol Santander. It is the city's architectural core and has budget hotels, but it empties after office hours and needs care.

Good
Historic sights within walking distance; Lower hotel prices; Major Metrô interchange
Watch out
Petty crime and phone theft; Deserted at night on many streets; Rough around Luz station
Nearby
Catedral da Sé, Theatro Municipal, Mercado Municipal, Edifício Copan

$$$ · Best for families and quiet stays

Vila Mariana and Moema

These residential districts on the eastern and southern sides of Ibirapuera Park are calm, safe-feeling bases for families, with bakeries, playgrounds and casual restaurants. Metrô Lines 1 and 5 serve them, and the park's museums and lawns are a short walk away.

Good
Walk to Ibirapuera; Calm residential streets; Good Metrô access
Watch out
Little nightlife; Further from the Centro
Nearby
Ibirapuera Park, Museu Afro Brasil, Auditório Ibirapuera
