Quick answer

São Paulo is not a classic family destination, but children enjoy its big parks, hands-on museums and the car-free Sunday on Avenida Paulista. Choose a base near a Metrô line and an attraction cluster, as distances and traffic tire children quickly. Top picks: Ibirapuera Park, Avenida Paulista and Catavento Cultural e Educacional. Families usually base themselves in Vila Mariana and Moema.

Park · Vila Mariana and Moema

1.Ibirapuera Park

The city's great park, opened in 1954, is a landscape of lakes and lawns linked by Oscar Niemeyer's long covered walkway, the Marquise. Around it stand Niemeyer buildings housing the Museu Afro Brasil, the Museu de Arte Moderna, the Bienal pavilion, the domed Oca and the red-tongued Auditório Ibirapuera.

Rent a bike at one of the park's rental points on a weekday morning, then visit the Museu Afro Brasil when the sun gets hot.

2.Avenida Paulista

São Paulo's signature avenue mixes bank towers, cultural centres, bookshops and the Parque Trianon, a fragment of Atlantic forest opposite MASP. On Sundays and public holidays the avenue closes to cars and becomes a promenade of cyclists, skaters, street bands and food stalls.

Come on a Sunday, walk from Consolação to Paraíso, and drop into Japan House and the Instituto Moreira Salles on the way.

3.Catavento Cultural e Educacional

A hands-on science museum in the eclectic Palácio das Indústrias, near the Parque Dom Pedro II, with sections on the universe, life, ingenuity and society. Children can touch meteorites, try physics experiments and explore models of the human body.

Take a taxi or ride-hailing car to the door; the surrounding area is busy with traffic and less pleasant on foot.

4.Instituto Butantan

One of the world's major producers of vaccines and anti-venoms, the Butantan Institute has a public park with museums of microbiology and biology and a snake collection, where visitors see venomous species from across Brazil. It is popular with school groups and families.

5.Museu da Língua Portuguesa

Inside the British-built Estação da Luz railway station, this interactive museum explores the Portuguese language through sound, video and games. It reopened in 2021 after a fire in 2015, and the station's clock tower and iron platforms are worth seeing in their own right.

Many exhibits work best if you have some Portuguese or Spanish, but the station building and the projection room appeal to everyone.
