What to drink
- Piña colada — Rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice blended with ice; Puerto Rico's national drink. Both the Caribe Hilton and Barrachina restaurant in Old San Juan claim to have created it in the 1950s–60s.
- Puerto Rican coffee — Coffee grown in the central mountains, served as a strong 'café' or as café con leche; local beans are a popular gift.
- Coquito — A creamy Christmas drink of coconut milk, condensed milk, rum and cinnamon, made at home and sold in bottles during the long holiday season.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. June has the warmest evenings, with lows around 25°C (77°F).
| Month | Sunset (15th) | Overnight low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 18:08 | 22°C (72°F) | 11 |

Getting home late
- Walking — Wear shoes with grip; the cobblestones are slippery after rain.
- Taxi — Agree the zone fare before departure for longer trips.
- Ride-hailing — Uber operates widely in the metro area and is often the easiest option for Santurce and evening trips.
- Bus — Public buses link the old town, Condado, Santurce and Isla Verde at low fares, but services can be infrequent.
- Ferry — A passenger ferry usually crosses the bay from Old San Juan to Cataño, the easiest way to Casa Bacardí without a car.
Late-night bites
- Alcapurrias — Beach kiosks in Piñones and Luquillo.
- Bacalaítos — Kiosks in Piñones and along the coast.
- Tostones — As a side or starter in nearly every restaurant.
Staying safe at night
Tourist areas are generally fine with normal precautions, but avoid deserted streets at night and do not leave valuables in cars or unattended on beaches. Rip currents affect several north-coast beaches, including parts of Condado. Follow official guidance during hurricane season, and use insect repellent, as mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue occur.
- Emergency number
- 911 (police, fire, ambulance)
