Day 1: Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Old San Juan streets and plazas
Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Old San Juan streets and plazas, Castillo San Cristóbal and Paseo de la Princesa and Paseo del Morro, then La Placita de Santurce in the evening.
Morning
Castillo San Felipe del Morro
Go early before the heat and cruise crowds; one entrance fee covers both El Morro and San Cristóbal. Allow 2 hours.
Late morning
Old San Juan streets and plazas
Walk early in the morning or around sunset, when the light is softer and the streets cooler. Allow Half a day.
Lunch
Lunch: Mofongo
Criollo restaurants in Old San Juan, Santurce and roadside spots island-wide.
Afternoon
Castillo San Cristóbal
Look for the sentry box known as the Devil's Garita on the outer walls, and visit San Cristóbal first if arriving from Condado. Allow 1.5 hours.
Late afternoon
Paseo de la Princesa and Paseo del Morro
Walk it in the late afternoon, then enter the city through the San Juan Gate and climb up to the cathedral. Allow 1 hour.
Evening
La Placita de Santurce
Visit twice: by day for a fresh juice and lunch, then late in the evening for the street party.
If it rains
- Swap in Cathedral of San Juan Bautista (Old San Juan): Dress modestly with covered shoulders, and visit outside Mass times.
- Swap in Museo de las Américas (Old San Juan): Combine it with El Morro; the barracks courtyard is a shaded break on a hot day.
- Swap in Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (Santurce): Follow it with lunch around La Placita de Santurce, a short ride away.

Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 10–12 hours of visiting over one day, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 11 hours in December to 13.2 hours in June.
Getting between stops: Walking. The old town is about 1 km across; walking between the two forts takes 15–20 minutes, mostly along the walls or through the streets.
