Nightlife tips

  • Buses stop running early in the evening; arrange a taxi back to your hotel in advance.
  • Try local Phoenix beer or a rum-based cocktail with rhum arrangé.

What to drink

  • Alouda — A sweet, cold milk drink with basil seeds, agar jelly and vanilla or rose syrup, a refresher after a market visit.
  • Mauritian rum — Mauritius produces both molasses rum and 'rhum agricole' distilled from fresh cane juice, often infused with vanilla, coffee or fruit as rhum arrangé.

Getting home late

  • Taxi — Taxis wait outside hotels and in towns; agree the fare before setting off.
  • Bus — Express buses between Port Louis and Grand Baie or Curepipe are much quicker than local services.
  • Tram — The Metro Express light rail runs between Port Louis and Curepipe via Rose-Hill, Quatre Bornes and Ebène, useful for a day in the capital from the central plateau.

Late-night bites

  • Dholl puri — Street stalls around Port Louis Central Market and in every town; locals queue at well-known vendors at lunchtime.
  • Farata — Street stalls and snack vans in Port Louis, Rose-Hill and beach car parks.
  • Gâteaux piments — Roadside vendors and markets across the island, especially in the morning.
  • Boulettes — Port Louis Chinatown and snack stalls around the island.
  • Mine frite — Snack bars, food vans and Chinese restaurants across the island.

Staying safe at night

Swim inside the lagoon and away from reef passes, where currents can be strong, and never swim off the unprotected south coast. Wear reef shoes against stonefish and urchins, and do not leave valuables on beaches or visible in parked cars.

Grand Baie

Grand Baie wraps around a sheltered bay in the north with the widest choice of restaurants, bars, supermarkets and mid-range hotels and apartments on the island. Catamarans leave from here for Coin de Mire and Gabriel Island, and Pereybère's beach is a few minutes north. It is busier and more built-up than other coasts.
