Money-saving tips

  • Eat street food at lunch and save restaurant meals for dinner; a filling dholl puri lunch costs very little.
  • Self-catering apartments in Pereybère, Flic en Flac and Grand Baie cost a fraction of resort prices.
  • Compare half-board and all-inclusive resort deals carefully, as drinks and excursions add up.
  • Hire a taxi driver for a full-day island tour rather than booking several separate excursions.
  • Travel in May, June or September for lower prices with good weather.
  • Supermarkets sell local rum, tea and spices at much lower prices than resort shops.

Free things to do

  • Le Morne Brabant — This 556-metre basalt monolith at the island's south-west tip sheltered escaped slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape.
  • Black River Gorges National Park — The island's largest national park protects most of its remaining native forest across deep gorges and the Black River Peak, at 828 metres the highest point in Mauritius.
  • Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) — A crater lake in the highlands that Mauritian Hindus regard as sacred, lined with temples and shrines.
  • Port Louis Central Market — The capital's Victorian iron-roofed market sells tropical fruit, vegetables, spices and herbal remedies downstairs, with textiles and souvenirs on the upper level.
  • Aapravasi Ghat — The remains of the immigration depot where about half a million indentured labourers, mostly from India, arrived between 1834 and 1920 to work on sugar estates.
  • Trou aux Cerfs crater — A dormant, forested volcanic crater about 300 metres across on the edge of Curepipe, with a road and footpath around its rim.

Getting around for less

Mauritius is small enough to cross in under two hours, but roads are narrow and busy around towns. Most visitors hire a car or a taxi with driver for day trips; buses cover the whole island cheaply but slowly, and the Metro Express light rail links Port Louis with the central towns.
