Day by day

  1. Day 1: Main Market Square and Cloth Hall

Main Market Square, Cloth Hall, St. Mary's Basilica and Rynek Underground, then Kazimierz Jewish quarter in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Main Market Square

The statue of the poet Adam Mickiewicz is the city's favourite meeting point.

    2. Late morning

      Cloth Hall

Upstairs, the National Museum's Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art shows large historical paintings, and its terrace looks over the square.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Pierogi

Milk bars and pierogi restaurants across the Old Town and Kazimierz; order a mixed plate to try several fillings.

    4. Afternoon

      St. Mary's Basilica

Its two unequal towers are the symbol of the city.

    5. Late afternoon

      Rynek Underground

Beneath the Main Square, excavated medieval market stalls, roads and foundations form a museum about Kraków's trading past, with holograms, touchscreens and finds such as coins and tools from the excavations.

    6. Evening

      Kazimierz Jewish quarter

Visit the synagogues in the morning, then return in the evening for dinner and drinks around Plac Nowy.

  2. Day 2: Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral

Wawel Castle, Wawel Cathedral, Dragon's Den and Wawel Dragon and Vistula boulevards, then Kazimierz and Plac Nowy in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Wawel Castle

The seat of Polish kings for five centuries, the castle on Wawel Hill has a Renaissance arcaded courtyard and several separate exhibitions: the State Rooms with King Sigismund Augustus's Flemish tapestries, the Private Royal Apartments, the Crown Treasury and Armoury, and the archaeological Lost Wawel.

    2. Late morning

      Wawel Cathedral

The gold-domed Sigismund Chapel is a Renaissance masterpiece, the crypts hold the tombs of kings and national heroes such as Tadeusz Kościuszko and the poet Adam Mickiewicz, and you can climb the tower to the huge Sigismund Bell.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Obwarzanek krakowski

Street carts on almost every Old Town corner, especially in the morning when they are freshest.

    4. Afternoon

      Dragon's Den and Wawel Dragon

You exit by the river beside a bronze dragon statue that breathes real fire every few minutes, a favourite with children.

    5. Late afternoon

      Vistula boulevards

The Father Bernatek footbridge, decorated with acrobat sculptures, crosses to Podgórze.

    6. Evening

      Kazimierz and Plac Nowy

Bohemian bars with mismatched furniture and candlelight, open late and lively all week.

Before you go

  • Wawel Castle: Each exhibition has its own timed ticket and daily limits; buy online or early in the day, especially in summer.
  • Rynek Underground: Entry is by timed ticket in limited numbers; reserve online at busy times.

MPK time tickets

24-, 48- and 72-hour and weekly tickets cover unlimited tram and bus travel; available from ticket machines and apps.

If it rains

  • Swap in Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory (Podgórze): Allow at least two hours; the exhibition is dense and moving, and it pairs naturally with Ghetto Heroes Square nearby.
  • Swap in Collegium Maius (Old Town): The courtyard is free to enter; the interiors are seen on a short guided tour.
  • Swap in Czartoryski Museum (Old Town): Go early or late in the day to spend a few quiet minutes with the Leonardo.

Pace and daylight

The sights in this plan add up to roughly 12–14 hours of visiting over 2 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 8.1 hours in December to 16.4 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.

Getting between stops: Walking. The Main Square to Wawel is about 10 minutes on foot along Grodzka Street, and Kazimierz is about 15–20 minutes.
