Quick answer

Dubrovnik is at its most romantic before the crowds arrive and after they leave: early-morning walls, sunset drinks on the rocks and dinners in candle-lit lanes. Couples tend to stay in Old Town (Stari Grad).

Old Town (Stari Grad)

Staying inside the walls puts the Stradun, the Rector's Palace and the wall entrances at your door, and the lanes are beautiful early in the morning and late at night when day visitors have gone. Accommodation is mostly in apartments and small guesthouses up steep stairways north and south of the Stradun.

Good
Sights on the doorstep; Magical in the quiet early hours; Swim from the rocks below the walls
Watch out
Hundreds of steps and no cars for luggage; Very crowded on cruise-ship days; Highest prices in the city
Nearby

Romantic day trips

  • Kotor and the Bay of Kotor (About 2–3 hours each way by road) — Kotor is a walled medieval town at the end of a fjord-like bay, with a climb of more than 1,300 steps to the fortress of San Giovanni.
  • Cavtat (About 30 minutes by bus, 45 by boat) — A small, calm harbour town with a palm-lined waterfront, the Račić family mausoleum by sculptor Ivan Meštrović and the house of the painter Vlaho Bukovac.
  • Ston and Mali Ston (About 1 hour by car) — The Walls of Ston run about 5.5 km over the hills between two villages, built to protect the Republic's salt pans, which still produce salt today.
  • Mljet National Park (About 1.5–2 hours by catamaran) — The western end of Mljet island is a forested national park around two saltwater lakes, with a 12th-century Benedictine monastery on an islet in the larger lake.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Black risotto, Peka and Grilled fish with blitva. Book dinner ahead in July and August, especially for terraces with sea views.
