Hvar Town
Hvar Town wraps around a harbour beneath the Fortica fortress, with St Stephen's Square, the cathedral and the Arsenal at its centre. It has the island's widest choice of hotels, restaurants and bars and the taxi boats to the Pakleni Islands, but it is expensive and very busy and loud in July and August.
- Good
- Most restaurants and bars; Taxi boats to the Pakleni Islands; Catamaran to Split
- Watch out
- High summer prices; Noise and crowds in peak season; Car-free centre means carrying luggage
- Nearby
- St Stephen's Square, Fortica, Pakleni Islands, Franciscan Monastery
Romantic day trips
- Blue Cave and Vis (About 1–1.5 hours by speedboat) — Full-day speedboat tours visit the Blue Cave on the islet of Biševo, where sunlight through an underwater opening turns the water bright blue, and usually stop at coves and towns on the island of Vis.
- Korčula (About 1–1.5 hours by catamaran) — Korčula Town is a compact walled town on a peninsula with herringbone streets, the Cathedral of St Mark and a strong wine tradition.
For dinner
Share local specialities such as Hvar gregada, Peka and Grilled fish with blitva. Inland villages and Stari Grad are usually better value than Hvar Town's waterfront.
