Money-saving tips

  • The Dubrovnik Pass bundles the walls with the Rector's Palace and other museums plus bus rides, and usually costs little more than the walls ticket alone.
  • Stay in Lapad, Babin Kuk or Gruž and take the bus in; rooms cost much less than inside the walls.
  • Eat away from the Stradun and the Old Port, where prices are highest.
  • Swim from the free rocks and public beaches instead of renting sunbeds at beach clubs.
  • Visit in May, early June or late September for lower hotel rates than in July and August.
  • Buy picnic supplies at the Gruž market or a supermarket before a day on Lokrum.

Free things to do

  • Stradun — The Old Town's main street runs about 300 metres from the Pile Gate to the Luža square and the Bell Tower, its limestone paving polished smooth by centuries of footsteps.
  • Cathedral of the Assumption — Rebuilt in baroque style after the 1667 earthquake, the cathedral holds a polyptych of the Assumption attributed to Titian's workshop above the altar.
  • Church of St Blaise — The baroque church of the city's patron saint faces the Stradun's eastern end.
  • Old Port — The small harbour on the eastern side of the walls is where boats leave for Lokrum and Cavtat and glass-bottomed boats run short coastal trips.
  • Gradac Park — A pine-shaded park on the cliffs just west of the Pile Gate, with benches looking across a small bay to Fort Lovrijenac and the western walls.
