Ways to get around
Car
A hire car is the easiest way to reach villages, viewpoints and quieter beaches; roads are narrow and winding, with steep descents to many coves.
A small car is easier on narrow village roads and in tight parking spaces.
Bus
Green KTEL buses connect Corfu Town with resorts across the island, and blue city buses serve the town, the suburbs, the airport and places such as Kanoni, Achilleion and Pelekas.
Long-distance services are less frequent on Sundays and outside summer.
Walking
Corfu Town's old town is best explored on foot, and the Corfu Trail runs about 220 km from the south of the island to the north.
Taxi
Taxis wait at ranks in Corfu Town, the port and the airport; fares to distant resorts can be high, so agree or check the price before setting off.
Boat
Excursion boats and water taxis run from resorts to coves, Paxos and Antipaxos, and small boats can be hired without a licence in many harbours on the north-east coast.
Ferry
Ferries from Corfu's New Port cross to Igoumenitsa on the mainland, to Saranda in Albania and to Italian ports, and boats run to Paxos.
From the airport
Corfu's Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport is about 3 km south of Corfu Town, roughly 10 minutes by taxi or a short ride on the blue city bus. Transfers take about 40 minutes to Paleokastritsa and around an hour to Sidari, Kassiopi or Kavos.
Do you need a car?
Recommended if you want to explore beyond one resort, since buses to villages and viewpoints are limited. If you stay in Corfu Town or a well-served resort and use boats and tours, you can manage without one.
