Gouvia and Dassia
Gouvia has a large yacht marina and the ruins of a Venetian shipyard, while neighbouring Dassia has a long, narrow beach with watersports and resort hotels. Both are within 15–20 minutes of Corfu Town by bus or car, which makes them practical bases for exploring the island.
- Good
- Close to town and the airport; Plenty of hotels and apartments; Watersports
- Watch out
- Narrow beaches; Busy main road
- Nearby
- Gouvia Marina, Venetian shipyard, Corfu Town, Aqualand
Getting to the beaches
- Car — A hire car is the easiest way to reach villages, viewpoints and quieter beaches; roads are narrow and winding, with steep descents to many coves.
- Bus — Green KTEL buses connect Corfu Town with resorts across the island, and blue city buses serve the town, the suburbs, the airport and places such as Kanoni, Achilleion and Pelekas.
- Boat — Excursion boats and water taxis run from resorts to coves, Paxos and Antipaxos, and small boats can be hired without a licence in many harbours on the north-east coast.
- Ferry — Ferries from Corfu's New Port cross to Igoumenitsa on the mainland, to Saranda in Albania and to Italian ports, and boats run to Paxos.
Beach-weather months
Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in May–September. The busiest of those is July, so book early.
Beach safety
Corfu is relaxed for visitors. The main risks are summer heat, sunburn, steep and winding roads (especially on scooters and quad bikes) and pickpocketing in crowded old-town lanes at peak times. Some west-coast beaches have strong waves on windy days. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
