Staying near the beach

Getting to the beaches

  • Metro — The metro line runs east–west under Egnatia Street from the New Railway Station past the city centre towards the eastern districts, and is the fastest way to cross the city.
  • Bus — OASTh city buses cover the whole urban area, including Ano Poli, Kalamaria and the airport, with frequent services along Egnatia and Tsimiski.

Beach-weather months

Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in May–September. None of them is peak season, so beaches stay manageable.

Beach safety

Thessaloniki is generally relaxed for visitors. Watch for pickpockets on crowded buses and in busy markets, and take care crossing the fast traffic on Egnatia and Tsimiski. In summer, heat is the main issue, so carry water and avoid walking at midday. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
