Quick answer
With a large student population, Thessaloniki has some of the liveliest nightlife in Greece. Evenings start late, bars fill after 11pm and the main clusters are Valaoritou, Ladadika and the streets around the university; in summer many clubs move to the coast. The main areas are Valaoritou, Ladadika, Navarinou and Kamara and Aristotelous Square and the seafront.

What to drink
- Meze with tsipouro or ouzo — Thessaloniki's ouzeri and tsipouradiko culture revolves around small plates — grilled sardines, octopus, peppers stuffed with cheese, aubergine salad — shared alongside small bottles of tsipouro or ouzo diluted with water and ice.

Getting home late
- Walking — The centre, Ladadika and the Roman monuments are 10–20 minutes apart on foot, and the seafront is flat.
- Metro — Check the operator's site for current lines and stations, as extensions are being added.
- Bus — Buy and validate a ticket before or on boarding; inspectors do check.
- Taxi — Blue-and-white taxis can be hailed or booked by phone and app, and are an affordable way up to Ano Poli or out to the airport.
Late-night bites
- Gyros and souvlaki pita — Souvlaki shops around Kamara, Navarinou Square and the university, open until late.
- Peinirli — Bakeries and small fast-food shops around the centre; ask for 'apli' for the plain cheese version.
Staying safe at night
Thessaloniki is generally relaxed for visitors. Watch for pickpockets on crowded buses and in busy markets, and take care crossing the fast traffic on Egnatia and Tsimiski. In summer, heat is the main issue, so carry water and avoid walking at midday.

Where to stay for nightlife

Ladadika
The former olive-oil and trading quarter between the port and Aristotelous Square was restored in the 1980s and 1990s, and its pedestrian lanes such as Katouni and Egyptou are now lined with tavernas, ouzeri and bars. Hotels here put you a short walk from the waterfront and the ferry and cruise port, but the area stays loud until the early hours at weekends.
- Good
- Dense choice of tavernas; Waterfront on the doorstep; Characterful restored buildings
- Watch out
- Noisy late at night; Restaurants on the main lanes can be touristy
- Nearby
- Thessaloniki Port, Aristotelous Square, Kapani Market
