What to drink
- Alaskan craft beer — Anchorage has a strong brewery scene, with spruce-tip ales, barley wines and hoppy pale ales served in taprooms around Midtown and Spenard.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 11°C (52°F).
| Month | Sunset (15th) | Overnight low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 16:20 | -12°C (10°F) | 9 |

Getting home late
- Walking — Downtown's grid, the museum, the railroad depot and the start of the Coastal Trail are all within a 15-minute walk.
- Bus — People Mover, the municipal bus system, links downtown with Midtown, Spenard, the university area and Eagle River; services are less frequent at weekends.
- Ride-hailing — Taxis and ride-hailing operate across the city and to the airport, though waits can be longer late at night.
Late-night bites
- Reindeer sausage — Street carts on 4th Avenue in summer and breakfast menus all over town.
- Birch syrup — Specialty food shops and gift stores downtown.
- Smoked salmon spread and jerky — Fish shops and markets; vacuum-packed versions travel well.
Staying safe at night
Wildlife is the most distinctive risk: moose wander through the city and bears use the trails, so keep your distance, make noise and carry bear spray in Chugach State Park. Never walk onto the Turnagain Arm mudflats, where fast tides and silt are deadly. In winter, ice and cold demand proper boots and layers; use normal city precautions downtown at night.
- Emergency number
