What to drink
- Espresso — Seattle is where Starbucks began in 1971, and the city's independent roasters and espresso bars still set its coffee culture. The Starbucks Reserve Roastery on Capitol Hill roasts beans on site.
- Washington wine and craft beer — Washington is one of the largest wine-producing US states, known for Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Riesling from the east of the state, while Seattle has dozens of breweries, many in Ballard.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 14°C (57°F).
| Month | Sunset (15th) | Overnight low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 16:44 | 2°C (36°F) | 19 |
| April | About 19:58 | 6°C (43°F) | 15 |
| July | About 21:03 | 14°C (57°F) | 4 |
| October | About 18:22 | 8°C (46°F) | 14 |
Getting home late
- Metro — Tap your ORCA card or contactless payment when you board and again when you leave to pay the correct distance-based fare.
- Bus — King County Metro buses cover the city, including frequent RapidRide lines to Ballard and West Seattle; they are the main option for Ballard and Fremont.
- Ferry — Walk-on passengers pay only on the outbound leg from Seattle, so the return to the city is free.
- Tram — The Seattle Center Monorail links Westlake Center and Seattle Center in about two minutes, and two streetcar lines serve South Lake Union and First Hill.
- Walking — Most downtown sights are within 20 minutes on foot, but streets climb steeply from the waterfront; public lifts and escalators in buildings help.
- Ride-hailing — Uber and Lyft are widely used, especially for Ballard, Fremont and Discovery Park, which are less convenient by rail.
Late-night bites
- Seattle-style hot dog — Street carts outside bars and stadiums in Pioneer Square, Capitol Hill and Belltown.
- Rainier cherries — Produce stalls at Pike Place Market and neighbourhood farmers' markets, usually June to July.
Staying safe at night
Car break-ins are common, so leave nothing in parked cars. Parts of downtown and Pioneer Square have visible homelessness and drug use; stay on busier streets after dark. Puget Sound and the lakes are cold enough to cause cold-water shock even in summer.
- Emergency number
- 911 (police, fire, ambulance)
