Getting around Agra
Public transport, passes, airport connections and when a car makes sense.
Updated By the AMZBooking editorial team
Quick answer
Agra's sights are spread along both banks of the Yamuna. App cabs, auto-rickshaws or a car with driver connect the Taj, Agra Fort, the east-bank tombs and Sikandra. Around the Taj, fuel vehicles are banned from the final stretch to protect the marble, so battery buses and carts take visitors from the parking areas to the gates. No self-drive car is needed.

Ways to get around
Ride-hailing
Uber and Ola cars and autos operate across Agra and are the easiest way to avoid fare negotiations between the Taj, the fort and the station.
Tuk-tuk
Auto-rickshaws and electric rickshaws are everywhere; agree the fare first. Hiring one for a half-day loop of the east-bank tombs is common.
Ignore drivers who insist on stopping at marble or gem shops.
Car
A car with driver for the day is the most comfortable option, especially for Fatehpur Sikri and Sikandra.
Metro
Agra's first metro line opened in 2024, linking the Taj East Gate area along Fatehabad Road to Agra Fort and the old city; it is still being extended.
Train
Agra Cantt station has fast trains to Delhi, including the Gatimaan Express, in about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours, plus trains to Jaipur and Gwalior.
Book ahead in peak season through IRCTC, and allow for fog delays in December and January.
From the airport
Agra's small airport has only a few domestic flights, so most international travellers fly into Delhi and continue by fast train from Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi station, or by road on the Yamuna Expressway, about 3.5–4 hours from central Delhi.
Do you need a car?
No self-drive car is needed. Use app cabs and autos within the city, and hire a car with driver for Fatehpur Sikri or a Golden Triangle tour.
