Agra neighbourhoods in detail
$ · Best for budget, solo travellers and first-timers
Taj Ganj
The cramped streets around the Taj Mahal's South and East gates are packed with budget guesthouses, many with rooftop restaurants looking at the dome. Staying here means walking to the gates for sunrise without a car. Lanes are noisy, narrow and full of touts and shops, and standards vary widely, so check recent reviews.
- Good
- Walk to the Taj for sunrise; Rooftop views of the dome; Low prices
- Watch out
- Touts and constant sales pitches; Basic rooms in many guesthouses
- Nearby
- Taj Mahal South Gate, Taj Mahal East Gate, Taj Museum
$$$$ · Best for luxury, couples and first-timers
Taj East Gate Road
The road leading to the Taj's East Gate is where Agra's most expensive hotels sit, including The Oberoi Amarvilas, about 600 metres from the monument, where rooms look directly at the Taj. Battery buses run from here to the gate because fuel vehicles are banned near the monument. It is calm and green compared with Taj Ganj.
- Good
- Closest luxury hotels to the Taj; Taj views from some rooms; Quiet surroundings
- Watch out
- Very expensive; Little to do outside the hotels
- Nearby
- Taj Mahal East Gate, Taj Nature Walk, Shilpgram
$$$ · Best for families, first-timers and luxury
Fatehabad Road
About 1–3 km south of the Taj, Fatehabad Road has most of Agra's large hotels, from mid-range chains to the ITC Mughal with its extensive gardens and spa. Many have pools, which matters in the hot season. Restaurants and a metro station are along the road, and the Taj's East Gate is a short auto-rickshaw ride away.
- Good
- Hotels with pools and gardens; Short ride to the Taj; Wide choice at every price
- Watch out
- A traffic-heavy highway setting; Not walkable to Agra Fort
- Nearby
- Taj Mahal East Gate, Taj Ganj, Shilpgram
$$ · Best for food lovers, shopping and budget
Sadar Bazaar and Agra Cantt
The cantonment area around Agra Cantt station has wide roads, older hotels and Sadar Bazaar, a pedestrian-friendly shopping street of leather shops, sweet sellers and chaat stalls that comes alive in the evening. It suits travellers arriving by train and those who want to eat where Agra's residents do.
- Good
- Close to the main station; Good evening street food; Less touristy
- Watch out
- About 15–20 minutes by road from the Taj; Fewer high-end hotels
- Nearby
- Agra Cantt station, Sadar Bazaar, Agra Fort
$ · Best for culture, food lovers and budget
Old City and Agra Fort
North-west of Agra Fort, the old city's Kinari Bazaar, Johri Bazaar and lanes around Jama Masjid sell wedding finery, spices, sweets and everyday goods. There are few hotels aimed at visitors, but it is the best area to see everyday Agra and to try breakfast bedai and jalebi.
- Good
- Authentic market life; Close to Agra Fort; Excellent street food
- Watch out
- Congested and chaotic; Very limited accommodation
- Nearby
- Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, Kinari Bazaar

Getting to your hotel
Agra's small airport has only a few domestic flights, so most international travellers fly into Delhi and continue by fast train from Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi station, or by road on the Yamuna Expressway, about 3.5–4 hours from central Delhi.
