Quick answer
Yogyakarta's nights are more about street food, live music and cafés than clubs: angkringan stalls, Malioboro's buskers, Alun-Alun Kidul's light-up cars and a handful of bars in Prawirotaman. The main areas are Prawirotaman, Malioboro and Tugu and Alun-Alun Kidul.

What to drink
- Kopi joss — Sweet black coffee into which a glowing piece of charcoal is dropped, making it hiss; locals say it reduces acidity. A Yogyakarta night-time ritual.
- Wedang ronde — A warm ginger drink with glutinous rice balls filled with ground peanuts and palm sugar, plus peanuts and bread cubes, sold from carts in the evening.
- Jamu — Traditional Javanese herbal tonics made from turmeric, ginger, tamarind and other roots, sold fresh by street sellers and in market stalls, each blend linked to a health benefit.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. September has the warmest evenings, with lows around 21°C (70°F).

|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 18:03 | 23°C (73°F) | 20 |

Getting home late
- Ride-hailing — Grab and Gojek cars and motorbike taxis are inexpensive and the easiest way to get around the city.
- Tuk-tuk — Agree the fare before setting off, and decline offers of a cheap ride that includes a stop at a batik shop.
- Bus — Trans Jogja buses run fixed routes across the city, including towards Prambanan, at low fares, but are slower than ride-hailing.
Late-night bites
- Bakpia — Bakeries in the Pathuk area west of Malioboro, where many family brands are named after their house numbers.
- Nasi kucing — Angkringan carts lit by oil lamps around Tugu station and across the city after dark.
Staying safe at night
Yogyakarta is generally safe and relaxed, but watch for batik-gallery scams on Malioboro and pickpockets in crowds. Mount Merapi is an active volcano, so follow official alert levels and exclusion zones, and do not swim at Parangtritis or the southern beaches, where rip currents are strong.
- Emergency number
- 112 general emergency, 110 police, 119 ambulance
