Getting home late
- Metro — Add a SmarTrip card to your phone's wallet so you can tap through the faregates without queueing at machines.
- Walking — The Mall is about 3 km from end to end and the monuments are spread out, so plan walking days in halves and wear comfortable shoes.
- Bus — Metrobus covers areas the trains don't reach, including Georgetown and upper Northwest, and accepts the same SmarTrip card.
- Ride-hailing — Taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy to find and useful for Georgetown, late nights and the Udvar-Hazy Center.
Late-night bites
- Half-smoke — Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street, open since 1958, plus carts and diners around the city.
- Mumbo sauce — Neighbourhood carry-outs and wing shops, especially in Northeast and Southeast DC; bottles are sold in some local shops.
- Pupusas — Salvadoran restaurants in Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant; ask for revueltas (pork, beans and cheese) or queso con loroco.
- Jumbo slice — Pizza counters along 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan.
Staying safe at night
The Mall and main visitor neighbourhoods are well policed and generally comfortable, but phone snatching and pickpocketing occur on busy Metro platforms and at large events. In summer the bigger risk is heat and humidity on the shadeless Mall: carry water and take breaks inside museums.
- Emergency number
- 911 (police, fire, ambulance)
