Quick answer

Ubud's romance comes from its setting: villas over jungle gorges, misty sunrises on rice-field ridges, candlelit dance in palace courtyards and long spa afternoons. It is a popular honeymoon base, often combined with a few nights on the coast. Couples tend to stay in Penestanan.

Penestanan

West of the Campuhan bridge, Penestanan sits on a ridge above the Wos river and is known for the Young Artists painting movement of the 1960s. Many lanes are footpaths through paddy fields, so it is quiet and largely free of traffic, with villas, yoga studios and small cafés. The steep staircase from Jalan Raya Campuhan is the quickest way in on foot.

Good

Romantic day trips

  • Mount Batur sunrise trek (About 1 hour by car, plus a 2-hour climb) — Treks to the 1,717-metre summit of this active volcano start in the dark from the villages around Lake Batur so that walkers reach the crater rim for sunrise over Mount Agung and Mount Rinjani on Lombok.
  • Sidemen valley (About 1–1.5 hours by car) — A quiet valley of rice terraces below Mount Agung, known for songket weaving workshops and walks between villages along irrigation channels.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Babi guling, Crispy duck and Bebek betutu. Many restaurants add tax and service of about 15–21% to the bill; menus usually say so at the bottom.
