Quick answer
For a small city, Tromsø has a famously lively nightlife, driven by its large student population: pubs, cocktail bars and late venues line Storgata and the streets around it, and bars stay busy even in the polar night. The main areas are Storgata, Ølhallen and the Mack brewery area and Harbourfront.

What to drink
- Mack beer — Mack was founded in Tromsø in 1877, and its lagers and seasonal beers are the local pride, now joined by craft beers from small northern breweries.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 9°C (48°F).
| Month | Sunset (15th) | Overnight low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 12:16 | -6°C (21°F) | 17 |
| April | About 20:47 | -2°C (28°F) | 12 |
| July | No sunset (polar) | 9°C (48°F) | 12 |
| October | About 17:04 | 1°C (34°F) | 17 |
Getting home late
- Walking — In winter, wear ice grips over your shoes; pavements are often icy and steep.
- Bus — Buy tickets in the regional transport app before boarding; it is usually cheaper than paying on board.
- Taxi — Taxis wait at ranks in the centre and at the airport and are useful for late returns from tours or the cable car in bad weather.
Late-night bites
- Stockfish — Delis and supermarkets, and in dishes on traditional menus.
- Waffles with brown cheese — Cafés in the centre, at the top of Fjellheisen and on many winter tours.
Staying safe at night
Tromsø is generally low-risk for visitors. The main hazards are winter conditions: icy pavements, extreme wind chill on tours, and snowy roads with reindeer and short daylight for drivers. Avalanche risk applies on mountain slopes in winter and spring, so hike or ski off-piste only with a guide, and never stop on the road to watch the aurora.
- Emergency number
- 112 police, 113 ambulance, 110 fire

Most hotels are here, and almost every northern lights, whale and husky tour picks up from the centre or the harbour, so it is the most practical base.
