Getting to the beaches

  • Bus — City buses connect the centre with outlying districts, the beaches and the Caves of Hercules in summer, but routes are confusing for first-time visitors.
  • Train — From Tanger Ville station, Al Boraq high-speed trains reach Rabat in about 1 hour 20 minutes and Casablanca in a little over 2 hours, and regular trains serve Asilah, Fes and Marrakech.
  • Ferry — Fast ferries from the city port at Tanja Marina Bay cross to Tarifa in Spain in about an hour; most other ferries to Spain use the larger Tanger Med port, about 40 km east.

Beach-weather months

Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in June–September. The busiest of those is July, so book early.

Beach safety

Check your own government's travel advice before travel. The most common problems are persistent unofficial guides and touts around the port and medina entrances, and pickpocketing in crowded areas; use metered petit taxis and keep valuables zipped away. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
