Rhodes Old Town
Inside the 4 km ring of walls, the Old Town mixes the Knights' quarter around the Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master with the livelier Bourg, where Sokratous Street, Hippocrates Square and the old Jewish quarter fill with shops and tavernas. Staying here means small boutique hotels in centuries-old houses, evening walks after the day-trippers leave and the town beach at Elli about 15 minutes away on foot.
- Good
- Atmospheric after dark; Walk to the main sights and the port; Distinctive small hotels
- Watch out
- Taxis cannot reach most hotels; luggage goes over cobbles; Bars around Sokratous Street can be noisy; No beach inside the walls
- Nearby
- Palace of the Grand Master, Street of the Knights, Archaeological Museum, Mandraki Harbour
Romantic day trips
- Symi (About 1 hour by fast catamaran) — Symi's harbour town, Gialos, is a steep amphitheatre of pastel neo-classical mansions built by 19th-century sponge merchants.
- Halki (About 2 hours by road and boat) — A tiny, car-light island off the west coast with a harbour village, Emborio, of restored captains' houses, a few pebble beaches and walks up to an abandoned village and a Knights' castle.
- Monolithos and the west-coast villages (About 1 hour 30 minutes by car) — A scenic drive down the west coast takes in Kritinia Castle, the wine village of Embonas, Siana for honey and souma, and finally Monolithos Castle on a sheer pinnacle of rock above the sea.
For dinner
Share local specialities such as Symi shrimp, Grilled octopus and Moussaka. Tap water in Rhodes Town is treated, but many tavernas serve bottled water by default; ask for a jug if you prefer.
