Money-saving tips

  • Book hire cars and Lindos accommodation early for July and August, when both sell out and prices rise.
  • Eat a gyros or a bakery pie at lunch and keep sit-down meals for the evening.
  • Many beaches have free areas beside the sunbed concessions; bring your own umbrella from a supermarket.
  • Travel in late May, June or late September for summer weather at noticeably lower hotel rates.
  • Buses to Lindos and the east coast cost a fraction of a taxi; use taxis only for late returns.
  • Some state archaeological sites offer free entry on certain national holidays and winter Sundays; check the Ministry of Culture's list.

Free things to do

  • Lindos village and St Paul's Bay — Lindos's whitewashed lanes hold captains' houses with carved doorways and black-and-white pebble-mosaic courtyards, and the Church of the Panagia with its frescoed interior.
  • Mandraki Harbour — Rhodes Town's old harbour is guarded by bronze statues of a stag and a doe on columns at its entrance, where legend places the Colossus.
  • Street of the Knights — Ippoton, the cobbled street running downhill from the Palace of the Grand Master, is lined with the inns where the Knights of St John lodged by language group, or 'tongue'.
  • Old Town walls and moat — The Knights' fortifications run for about 4 km around the Old Town, with massive gates such as the d'Amboise Gate and the Marine Gate.
  • Monte Smith and the Acropolis of Rhodes — On the hill above the west side of town, the ancient acropolis has partly re-erected columns of the Temple of Pythian Apollo, a restored stadium and a small marble theatre.
  • Seven Springs (Epta Piges) — Inland from Kolymbia, springs feed a stream through a shaded plane-tree valley where peacocks wander.

Getting around for less

Rhodes Town and the Old Town are best explored on foot. Two bus networks link the town with the rest of the island: KTEL buses cover the east coast as far as Lindos and the south, and RODA municipal buses serve the town, the west coast and the airport. A hire car is the easiest way to reach the castles, villages and quieter beaches.
