Kata and Karon
South of Patong, Karon has a long, uncrowded beach and Kata a pretty bay with an island offshore and gentle beginner surf from May to October. Kata Noi, over the headland, is smaller and quieter. Restaurants and bars are plentiful but far calmer than Patong.
- Good
- Good beaches for swimming in the dry season; Family-friendly hotels; Easy reach of Patong and the south
- Watch out
- Rip currents in the monsoon; Steep roads between beaches

Romantic day trips
- Phi Phi Islands (About 1–2 hours by boat) — Limestone cliffs, Pileh Lagoon and Maya Bay — where swimming is not allowed and which closes for part of each year to let the reef recover — make Phi Phi the classic day trip.
- Phang Nga Bay (About 1 hour to the bay) — Hundreds of limestone towers rise from emerald water, including Khao Phing Kan, known as James Bond Island.
- Similan Islands (About 3 hours including road transfer and speedboat) — A protected national-park archipelago famous for granite boulders, white sand and some of Thailand's best diving and snorkelling.
- Koh Yao Noi (About 30–60 minutes by boat) — A quiet, mostly Muslim island in Phang Nga Bay with rubber plantations, rice fields, homestays and views of the limestone karsts — a glimpse of rural island life.
- Krabi and Railay (About 2–3 hours by ferry or road) — Krabi's Railay peninsula, reached only by boat, has cliff-backed beaches, rock climbing and Phra Nang Cave Beach.
For dinner
Share local specialities such as Phuket Hokkien noodles, Moo hong and Tom yum goong. Alcohol sales are restricted at certain hours and on some Buddhist holidays.
