Lamai

South of Chaweng, Lamai has a long beach with clear water and rocky headlands, a compact centre of bars and Muay Thai venues, and good-value accommodation. Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks are at the southern end, and the Na Muang waterfalls are about 20 minutes away.

Good
Good value compared with Chaweng; Attractive beach; Some nightlife without the crush
Watch out
Rougher sea in the rainy season; Town centre a little scruffy
Nearby
Hin Ta and Hin Yai, Lamai night market, Na Muang Waterfalls

Romantic day trips

  • Ang Thong National Marine Park (About 1–2 hours by boat) — An archipelago of more than 40 limestone islands with kayaking among the karsts, snorkelling, a steep climb to the viewpoint on Koh Wua Talab and the enclosed Emerald Lake on Koh Mae Ko.
  • Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan (About 1.5–2 hours by high-speed boat) — Koh Tao is one of the world's busiest places to learn to dive, with clear water and coral reefs.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Gaeng som pla, Tom kha gai and Seafood barbecue. Alcohol is not sold on major Buddhist holidays, even in resorts.
